About This Course
A preparatory course designed to strengthen fundamental mathematics skills and support students in passing the assessment required to fulfil Additional Learning Requirements (OFA) for Bachelor's degree programmes offered by the Department of Management.
The course provides a preparatory pathway for the assessment required to fulfil the Additional Learning Requirements (OFA) in Mathematics. Through lectures and guided exercises, the MOOC develops the core mathematical skills required of students enrolled in economics and management degree programmes.
The topics covered include:
- properties and operations with numbers;
- absolute value;
- algebraic manipulation and notable products;
- polynomials and factorisation techniques;
- first- and second-degree equations and inequalities;
- powers and roots;
- exponential and logarithmic functions;
- rational, irrational, logarithmic and exponential equations and inequalities;
- linear systems;
- analytic geometry in the Cartesian plane;
- the equation of a line and the main geometric loci;
- functions and their properties;
- graphical representation of elementary functions.
The course is designed to strengthen the fundamental mathematical skills required to successfully undertake university studies and to pass the OFA assessment.
Target
Primary target: Undergraduate students enrolled in the Department of Management's Bachelor's degree programmes who have been assigned Additional Learning Requirements (OFA) in Mathematics.
Secondary target: All students interested in assessing and strengthening their entry-level mathematics skills.
Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- perform operations correctly with integers, rational numbers, and real numbers;
- apply the rules of algebraic manipulation and notable products;
- carry out operations with polynomials and use the main factorisation techniques;
- solve first- and second-degree equations and inequalities;
- correctly apply powers, roots, exponential functions, and logarithms;
- solve basic rational, irrational, exponential, and logarithmic equations and inequalities;
- solve elementary systems of linear equations;
- represent points and relationships in the Cartesian plane;
- interpret the equation of a line and the main geometric loci;
- identify and analyse the fundamental properties of functions;
- interpret and construct graphs of elementary functions;
- approach the OFA assessment with the mathematical knowledge and skills required for successful completion.

Course Professor
Marco Seracini
Marco Seracini holds a degree in Electronic Engineering and a PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics. He is a researcher with extensive experience in the development of mathematical models, image processing, and artificial intelligence applications in the biomedical, physical, and environmental fields.
He has conducted research at the Universities of Bologna, Perugia, and Florence, and has also served as a Visiting Researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
He holds the Italian National Scientific Qualification (Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale) as Associate Professor (Second Level) in the disciplinary field FIS/07 and has advanced expertise in software development and the management of international research projects.
